Chapter 8

He Seemed To Have Really Lost His Cub.

Xia Shen Shu shrugged; however, no one in the room could laugh.

No matter why the Corpse King in this city didn’t kill them, it doesn’t change the fact that there’s still another Corpse King that was lured into the city.

The Corpse King is an absolutely powerful being. After two mutations, they possess powerful abilities beyond human imagination. They are bloodthirsty and cruel, taking pleasure in slaughter. Some of them have even broken through their human shells and become truly monstrous.

“The Corpse King that was chasing you, is it nearby?” Ji Yanqing asked softly.

“Yes, but I don’t know where exactly he is; we got separated from the others.”

The room was quiet.

Xia Shen Shu and the others’ complexions were not good. They glared at that person one after another, but they also knew that even if they killed him, it would be too late to remedy the situation. As early as when that corpse king entered this city, it was impossible for them to stand idly by.

“Bang! Bang!”

Gunshots suddenly rang out.

Everyone in the room looked towards the direction the gunshots came from.

The gunshots came from beyond the sound of breaking glass, some distance away from them.

Inside the house, the others looked at each other in dismay, and for a while none knew what to think.

The school’s zombies had already been stimulated, and when the gunshots rang out, no matter what was going on there and whether or not there was a corpse king, everyone there was sure to die.

Xia Shen Shu looked over at Ji Yanqing, “What do we do now?”

Ji Yanqing glanced at the time, got up, and approached the window. He peeked sideways at the outside scenery. The sun’s rays shone brightly into the room, as though it were the height of summer. In the yard, several zombies shuffled back and forth. “Wait.”

After that brief delay, it was already ten o’clock, the hottest time of the day.

Xia Shen Shu tried to speak but stopped, swallowing the words that were already on his tongue.

Ji Yanqing was right. Even if they could withstand the heat and move, there were zombies everywhere outside. Once they were discovered by the zombies or made any noise, it was very likely that they would attract the corpse king, and then there would only be one dead end.

Instead, it would be better to remain passive and wait for the right moment.

Ji Yanqing left the window and returned to the room.

The building has been transformed into a rental for student’s parents who come to accompany their children. The two bedrooms and a living room were so narrow and cramped that just a few extra pieces of furniture would make the small living room feel overcrowded.

That was the case in the room they were in.

Unable to leave, Ji Yanqing returned to sit beside Ji An, removing his own windbreaker, which left him wearing just a T-shirt.

The others leaned against the wall and sat on the floor, taking off their assorted outerwear.

The temperature outside had already soared past fifty degrees Celsius. Inside, with only a window open, the conditions were scarcely better than the outdoors. Under such scorching heat, their bodies would uncontrollably start to heat up even if they just sat still, without moving a muscle.

Ji Yanqing glanced at Ji An. Unable to tolerate the heat any longer, Ji An had already taken off his coat, revealing his scrawny body. His face was flushed, but he seemed to be in better spirits than before.

Ji Yanqing lightly touched his head, “Thirsty?”

Ji An shook his head, but his Adam’s apple was moving uncontrollably in spite of himself.

He knew that Ji Yanqing could no longer spare him a drop of water.

He looked at Ji Yanqing with some guilt. Before, Ji Yanqing could have chosen not to give him the water.

Ji Yanqing’s eyebrows softened beneath his goggles. A faint smile formed in his eyes, contradicting his aloof and distant facade, and revealing a warm and gentle gaze.

Ji Yanqing silently took the other child out of his backpack and, after removing the child’s outer garment, did not speak further.

Inside the room, the rest of the people also quietly leaned on the walls and closed their eyes to rest.

The human body will experience heat exhaustion, dehydration, dizziness, and blurred vision when the body temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius. 42 degrees Celsius is the critical temperature, and a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius will cause certain death within an hour.

The outdoor temperature had long since exceeded 50 degrees, and although the indoor temperature was slightly cooler, it definitely wasn’t lower than 50 degrees. Of course, their body temperatures had long since surpassed 38 degrees.

In the midst of extreme heat, exhaustion, sleepiness, thirst, and hunger all strike together, making one’s consciousness blurry and confused.

In the silence that had been going on for an indefinite period, Ji Yanqing detected that the wall behind him was gradually becoming scorching hot. He tried to shift his body but found that he had no strength at all.

His entire being felt like he was in a sauna, not just his skin was scorching hot, even his insides were burning up. His whole abdomen felt like it was about to explode.

Ji Yanqing’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, his dry and sore throat made it painful for him to breathe. He desperately wanted to jump into a body of cold water and take a refreshing cold shower.

Imagining the sensation of icy water gushing over his body, Ji Yanqing’s thirst intensified.

There came a subtle sound from inside the room.

Ji Yanqing opened his eyes and glanced around. He saw that someone was unable to bear the heat, so they took something out to fan themselves. It could temporarily relieve the heat, but it would quickly dehydrate them.

Ji Yanqing glanced at the two children beside him. The younger one was still unconscious, while Ji An was becoming so drowsy from the heat that his little head was nodding off. He wanted to sleep, but was too hot to do so.

He didn’t go to disturb him. In this kind of situation, it was easier to get through it in a daze. Being awake would only make it more painful.

Ji Yanqing lightly closed his eyes, his consciousness also becoming hazy along with the rising steam.

“BAM!” A loud bang suddenly rang out nearby, the movement so great that it shook the whole building beneath them.

The deafening sound echoed throughout the room, startling the previously drowsy occupants. They felt a chill run down their spines and their limbs grow cold.

The group tried to figure out what was happening. However, before they could get up and go look, a second deafening sound rang out.

“Bam!”

“Boom, boom, boom...”

The sound of buildings being smashed, mixed with a multitude of gunfire, erupted right beside the road next to the building they were in. The noise was like thunder from a clear sky, making everyone’s hearts pound violently in response.

“ROAR!” Amidst the chaos, a beast’s thunderous shout shook the eardrums of all, shattering every nearby glass window.

Blood rushed through their veins, their heads buzzing. The drowsy crowd was stunned, standing there like fools.

Ji Yanqing endured the discomfort and picked up his axe, using the handle to push himself up. He tried to move closer to the window to see what had happened.

He had only just gotten up from the ground when another loud noise shook the room, followed by the building shuddering and then tilting to one side beneath their feet.

Ji Yanqing only had time to turn around and hold Ji An and the other child before the world spun.

In the midst of the chaos, he only felt several impacts all over his body before his consciousness faded away completely.

In the dust-filled basement of a construction site, in front of a pile of debris:

With his long sword leaning by his side, Feng Yimo’s pair of deep black eyes held a faint trace of confusion. He was preoccupied with pondering the problems of the city when suddenly, a deafening roar erupted out of nowhere.

Feng Yimo slowly lifted his gaze, looking towards the direction from which the sound came.

He had wondered how a city could do all this. Now he understood.

***

Ji Yanqing wasn’t sure how long he had been unconscious, but it couldn’t have been too long. When he came to, objects inside the house, which had been completely flipped upside down, were still sliding down the walls.

Ji Yanqing looked down at the two children in his arms. Both were unharmed.

Ji Yanqing glanced at the others. Those who were left unprotected were scattered haphazardly among a pile of furniture and the ruins of buildings, their life or death unknown.

“Roar!”

The roaring and gunfire continued, with the roar full of vigor, mingled with anger and a murderous intent, while the sound of gunfire was gradually fading.

Things were headed in the worst possible direction. They had already run out of time and had to find water as soon as possible, but to make matters worse, the Corpse King had also caught up to them.

“Wake them!” Ji Yanqing gave an order in a low voice to Lan Zi, who had just regained consciousness.

Turning around, Ji Yanqing quickly stuffed the smaller child into the backpack, only to notice the child had already awakened. He woke up at the worst possible moment, his eyes wide with fear and unease as he surveyed his surroundings.

“Don’t make a sound.” Ji Yanqing only had time to leave a warning before he quickly put on his backpack.

After stuffing all the food from his other bag into this one, Ji Yanqing picked up the axe and carried Ji An. He scanned his surroundings.

“Let’s get out of here!” Making sure everyone was staggering to their feet, Ji Yanqing lightly stepped on the sofa and moved towards the wall, which should have been the floor but now was the ceiling, heading for a crack in the wall through which they could escape.

Arriving at the edge of the crevasse, Ji Yanqing cautiously ventured out, having seen neither corpse kings, regular zombies, nor humans outside.

Looking around, the houses and streets that were once neatly planned, even the nearby school, had all collapsed and were destroyed as if they had been hit by an earthquake, leaving a scene of complete devastation.

The vibrations and roars continued, yet the gunfire had already ceased.

“Over here!” Ji Yanqing glanced back at the others briefly before taking the lead and running in a direction away from the roaring vibrations.

The others clenched their teeth and hastened to keep up.

Most of them were thrown so violently that their internal organs seemed to have shifted places. The intense pain made everything they looked at seem to wobble, and their feet felt as if they were stepping on cotton. Among all of them, only Ji Yanqing seemed to possess an inexplicably superb physical condition, effortlessly carrying one child on his back and holding another in his arms as he ran swiftly, as if he was completely unaffected.

After sprinting over a thousand meters through the ruins in one go, they finally stopped and turned around once they reached a cluster of buildings that hadn’t collapsed.

The battlefield was on the other side, far from where they stood. From their position, they could only see a massive black figure moving swiftly.

That creature was like a wild beast, yet it had a massive stature equivalent to three stories tall. It roared wildly, exuding ferocity and brutality.

The icy killing intent it emitted was so dense and thick, it almost felt tangible, engulfing them from kilometers away as if they were submerged in water, rendering their limbs powerless.

The scorching sun baked them, with high temperatures spreading all over, causing their skin to sting with pain. Yet, a chill emanated from within, leaving everyone feeling cold inside.

“That is...” Xia Shen Shu couldn’t even bother to wipe away the blood trickling from his nose, his eyes full of shock.

They had all heard of a Corpse King, but none had ever seen one with their own eyes; this was their first encounter.

It was only upon witnessing the sight firsthand, seeing the expanse of ruins continuously growing and observing steel structures easily demolished, that everyone truly realized the entity they faced was far more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.

They have transcended the definition of living beings; they are, without a doubt, a group of true monsters. Such monsters cannot be dealt with by ordinary survival teams, and even dispatching a heavily armed battalion might not guarantee their defeat.

“Let’s go.” Ji Yanqing took the lead again, still heading in the opposite direction; they had to put as much distance as possible between the beast and themselves. And hurry out of the city.

There was a moment when Ji Yanqing even began to hope that there truly was a Corpse King still lurking within the city, wishing for its presence right then and there. Because only another Corpse King had the power to slay that monster.

“Damn it...” Xia Shen Shu wiped away the blood from his nose, gritting his teeth as he maintained his pace.

Others also followed suit.

Their limbs were still weak, and their heads buzzed, but none of them wanted to die here like this.
