Chapter 24

People With a Few Stinky Coins Think They're So Great!

“Rong...”

Yi Zhen froze.

“Help me call him,” he said, “I swear, what madness is this now?”

Rong Hongxue promptly answered the communication.

“Xiao Zhen,” he smiled slightly, “still awake? Preparing for your competition?”

“Why did you send me money?” Yi Zhen got straight to the point. “You should know that’s my personal account.”

“Then why don’t you ever use your main account?” Rong Hongxue countered. “The dividends from Rong Enterprises continuously contribute to your balance. After my elder brother... after Rong Huaiyu left, a portion of his shares were transferred under your name as well. Even if you can’t exercise direct control, you certainly aren’t lacking in funds.”

His words were gentle and courteous, even calling his elder brother’s name with such ease, portraying himself as a model of fraternal affection…

Yi Zhen felt his teeth grind at the tone. He replied, “I won’t use the money Rong Huaiyu left behind.”

“Xiao Zhen, you’ve become quite stubborn.” Rong Hongxue’s voice sounded deeply concerned. “If I hadn’t suddenly remembered today, I wouldn’t have known you never touched your main account. Your personal account shockingly has only four hundred and thirty-two starcoins.”

“... Thank you for your concern, and I’m glad to hear that you rounded up my share, but let’s return to the original question,” Yi Zhen said. “I do indeed need money, but not yours, nor such a large amount as two million. I...”

“In the past two and a half minutes of our conversation,” Rong Hongxue interrupted him, “the mines across various star systems—primarily those under the Warhorse, Azoth, and Scarlet Dusk systems—have been generating approximately 150 million starcoins in income per minute for me, along with nearly 70 million starcions in expenses and outlays each minute. When I picked up your call two and a half minutes ago and addressed you as ‘Little Zhen’,” he smiled, “I had already recouped the two million I transferred to you.”

Yi Zhen was momentarily speechless.

Alright, impressive—you’re a top-tier fictional character, and being the protagonist makes it even more so, right? And as a protagonist who also happens to be a stellar mining magnate, you’re on another level entirely, like badass-plus. At least there’s no worry about inflation devaluing the currency or anything like that.

Noticing his silence, Rong Hongxue casually changed the topic. “Speaking of which, have you made any progress regarding the Empire’s Heroic Competition?”

Yi Zhen, unsure why Rong Hongxue was asking this, nonetheless engaged in conversation since it seemed like casual small talk. “What insights could I have? It’s just about being well-prepared.”

“I know you signed up behind my back, but that’s fine,” Rong Hongxue murmured thoughtfully. “I’ll return in a month to serve as one of the main examiners for the finals. Hmm... This year, there are several times more participants from noble families, powerful elites, and aristocratic heirs compared to previous competitions. Do you know why?”

His fingertips rhythmically tapped on the metallic table, producing a steady cadence. Yi Zhen, following his lead, asked involuntarily, “Is it because there were changes to the competition rules this time?”

Rong Hongxue smiled. “Yes, yet also no. The reason is that whoever wins this competition will gain a share in the extraction rights for Crimson Cloak’s biominerals. The champion’s fiefdom will be directly placed near the mining planets of the Crimson Cloak Galaxy, or they might even receive an entire mineral-rich planet outright—an unparalleled fortune. Such riches are enough to make anyone privy to the situation take desperate risks, betting everything they have.”

Yet again, the Crimson Cloak surfaced.

Yi Zhen furrowed his brow. “In other words, when Natalia’s cousin was dispatched to the Crimson Cloak Galaxy, it was with the aim of securing the competition’s rewards?”

“The Black Dragon’s executioner...” Rong Hongxue chuckled softly. “He only acts under the family’s name when carrying out purging missions for Duke Norst. It seems that with the impending ascension of the Crown Prince, even prime dragons must seek alternative paths for their future.”

This revelation carried significant implications and wasn’t easily decipherable, so Yi Zhen set it aside momentarily and asked Rong Hongxue another question instead: “What exactly is this biomineral from the Crimson Cloak Galaxy?”

“It’s living metal,” Rong Hongxue replied languidly. “Apart from its exceptional hardness and resilience, when combined with specialized forging techniques, it creates weapons or protective gear that are incredibly difficult to damage. This is because it possesses self-regenerating properties, akin to memory metals.”

“You mean it can automatically repair damaged areas, like how nails grow back or hair regenerates? But how is that possible...?”

“The Crimson Cloak Galaxy has its own ruler as well, although not an emperor nor a deity, but a Sage,” Rong Hongxue explained.

“Could it be that this Sage was... Lady Yun Xingchen[e/n: Literally Fallen Star] ?” Yi Zhen asked.

Rong Hongxue smiled. “Indeed. The Flowing Ether, Laws of Myriad Heavens, The Fallen Star, her wisdom illuminating countless millennia of darkness—her titles are countless. Lady Yun Xingchen, the true ruler of the Crimson Cloak Galaxy.”

“Much about her remains shrouded in mystery. Although our first encounter was rather unpleasant, she did reveal some truths to me—the position of Sage is not for life. Despite their nearly endless lifespans, all things must come to an end. When a successor emerges, the incumbent Sage spontaneously seeks out their final resting place. Their body gradually returns to oblivion amidst the long wait, while their energy and spirit dissipate like morning dew under sunlight, slowly evaporating away.”

“For thousands of years after a Sage’s death, the star cluster near their burial site experiences unprecedented prosperity and flourishing.”

Yi Zhen remarked, “Like elephant graveyards or whale falls... so, Sages were immense beings?”

“Yes,” Rong Hongxue replied. “Biominerals, extracted from these burial sites, seem infused with the spirits of past Sages, giving them an almost living quality. This makes them incredibly valuable.”

Yi Zhen finally grasped part of the backstory. Despite speaking with Rong Hongxue, he couldn’t help but momentarily feel captivated by the idea—biominerals... If only he could study them; they would undoubtedly revolutionize his weapon-making techniques.

“Let’s move on, forget about that for now,” Rong Hongxue said. “I remember you don’t have your own set of machinery yet, correct?”

Still pondering weaponry, Yi Zhen replied absently, “Hmm... Yes, that’s right.”

“You should know, the machinery sold in the market will never feature the highest-quality craftsmanship. Cutting-edge technologies are monopolized by the families of renowned mechanists.” Rong Hongxue sighed. “What if you need top-tier machinery? How would we address that?”

Yi Zhen grabbed a sheet of paper and began sketching design drafts, his pen moving steadily as he listened, somewhat distracted. “Ah... indeed, what would we do then?”

“To remedy this, I’ve dispatched a team to meet you,” Rong Hongxue softly explained. “They’ll introduce you to mechanical masters who can create bespoke, unparalleled works tailored to your needs. Three artisans honored with the Azoth Empire’s highest accolades will personally craft these exceptional pieces for you.”

Yi Zhen’s mouth slightly gaped open. “Really? That sounds amazing! You sent... Wait a minute.”

He lifted his head, stammering, “What... what did you just say?”

Tai’a chimed in, “Oh, when he strikes, it’s quite intense indeed.”

“Machinery is standard equipment for all tournament participants,” Rong Hongxue innocently tapped on the table. “Without your own mech, how can you compete against opponents whose strength has been amplified by several, or even dozens to hundreds of times?”

Yi Zhen protested, “No, that’s not the main point...”

“As for the competition rules and intelligence on opponents, there’s no need for you to worry about those,” Rong Hongxue continued. “The think tank will handle everything for you. Do you still require mentors? Whether from Azoth University, Star Alliance, Imperial Heavy Industries, FirstTech... You have free rein to choose among these prestigious institutions’ instructors. The individuals visiting you tomorrow will bring along a directory; simply make your selections based on that list.”

“I...” Yi Zhen trailed off.

*Bro, what are you talking about all of a sudden?*

Azoth University, Star Alliance, Imperial Heavy Industries, FirstTech... These universities were ranked at the top across the entire Azoth Empire. Graduates from such institutions would inevitably become high-ranking elites in various fields, shaping their future prospects and even determining the direction of the nation as a whole.

Naturally, their mentors were among the greatest of great masters. Passing by Azoth University’s entrance, one could toss a brick and likely hit five or six lifetime professors from various fields. It wouldn’t be surprising if you spotted a shaky old man rummaging through trash bins in the morning, only to see him shakily wielding a laser pointer later that afternoon, standing in a lecture hall with a feeble voice, welcoming students to Advanced Alchemical Slate Studies. Amidst coughs, he might say, “Ahem, forgive my humble self; I just happen to bear the undeserved title of Grand Miracle Worker. Please feel at ease, no need for nervousness... ahem.”

...So much for needing a roster! Are we picking escorts at a club or something?!

Wait, upon closer reflection of his conversation with Rong Hongxue... Phew, almost fell for it like a frog slowly boiled in water!

Yi Zhen slammed down his pen. “You mentioned earlier that you dispatched a team?”

“Yes,” Rong Hongxue replied, “they should arrive tomorrow.”

In other words, this wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. All those mentions of mechanical masters, think tanks, and rosters... Had he meticulously planned everything well in advance?

Tai’a chimed in: [Indeed, never fight unprepared.]

Yi Zhen was speechless.

He genuinely couldn’t find the words to describe this peculiar feeling.

Take a deep breath, don’t panic.

Considering the travel time and distance, to reach their destination, Rong Hongxue must have started preparing these arrangements at least two weeks ago—virtually coinciding with the moment Yi Zhen registered for the competition.

After setting everything up, he didn’t give any prior notice but meticulously timed it so that on the eve before the team’s arrival, he transferred a staggering sum of credits directly into Yi Zhen’s personal account, enough to shock him profoundly.

Then, knowing Yi Zhen would inevitably call, he patiently waited until he gradually seized control of the conversation. From there, he nonchalantly steered the topic towards his desired direction, almost convincing Yi Zhen to nod in agreement.

What dastardly... what a twisted way to handle matters!

Yi Zhen opened and closed his mouth several times. As things stood, the instances where he could outwit Rong Hongxue were dwindling, while the occasions when Rong Hongxue managed to catch him off-guard were increasing. Could this be the legendary scenario of teaching one’s apprentice only to be surpassed…?

“I can’t accept it,” he eventually said dryly after a long pause. “I don’t need machinery or mentors, nor do I require a think tank. All I want to ask is, why did you go through all this trouble to help me?”

Tai’a chimed in: [I believe this exemplifies textbook-level courtship etiquette [e/n: In danmei, at least] .]

“I think it’s best if you just close your mouth for now,” Yi Zhen retorted.

Rong Hongxue fell silent for a moment. Strangely, perhaps due to his imagination, Yi Zhen detected a hint of disappointment—or maybe even hurt—in Rong Hongxue’s voice.

“Then why won’t you accept them?”

Yi Zhen pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a long sigh.

A Mech? He had never heard of assassins needing such formidable combat platforms that roar with power during movement.

A mentor could be useful for teaching martial arts or combat techniques, but if a mechanic were involved, they would inevitably detect traces of his hidden weapons—unacceptable. As for alchemists... Well, alchemists were notoriously unreliable. Who knows who might end up instructing whom? The courses offered by healers and illusionists also wouldn’t suit him.

As for the think tank... Since he was already the protagonist, relying on a group of advisors to analyze and guide him would seem excessive, making it appear as though he couldn’t function independently.

In the end, Yi Zhen could only say, “Because my path... is different.”

Rong Hongxue fell quiet.

The night indeed has a calming effect. In this darkness, as long as Rong Hongxue didn’t provoke him, Yi Zhen was willing to temporarily avoid stirring conflict. However, this situation seemed to exceed Yi Zhen’s expectations; not only did Rong Hongxue refrain from provoking him, but he also went to great lengths to strategize for Yi Zhen—even if it was a one-sided effort.

Yi Zhen was genuinely more receptive to gentleness than forcefulness. He could engage with others using the sharpest edges known to the world, but when they softened their approach, he found himself at a loss.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Rong Hongxue began, his voice now deep and cold. “Your refusal to utilize your inheritance or accept my assistance is merely an attempt to distance yourself from me. You still think of Rong Huaiyu, don’t you? But alas, it’s too late to establish boundaries now, Xiao Zhen.”

He chuckled softly. “At Rong Qing’s[e/n: Rong Hongxue and Huaiyu’s father] funeral, I tasted the flavor of your lip balm for the first time—it was peach, unforgettable even to this day. In your haste to flee, I left several finger marks on your slender waist. How did Rong Huaiyu react? That useless man probably just told you to endure once again, didn’t he? Now, neither can you bear it nor does he remain by your side. After these years entangled together... Xiao Zhen, do you truly wish to distance yourself from me?”

Yi Zhen pondered briefly, considering how Rong Hongxue’s words started with intimacy yet ended with palpable bitterness. Surprisingly, he wasn’t overly angered; instead, he responded with the indulgent tone one might use towards a mischievous child. “Honestly speaking, I wouldn’t try distancing myself from you, not even as an experiment.”

After all, as the only two protagonists in this damn book, breaking up and going our separate ways is simply not possible in this lifetime. Maybe I’ll try again next time.

“Furthermore, I don’t really care about any past entanglements between us.”

Our main storyline has always been more physical than emotional; neither of us truly comes out at a disadvantage. You might think you took advantage of me, but little did you know, I got my fair share too—though strictly speaking, it wasn’t even mine to begin with.

“So, there’s no need to get so upset, nor should you take matters into your own hands... making it seem like you’re pursuing me or something.”

...That’s not what you intended, right? When we first met, you told me to crawl, and in response, you received a wrist-breaking discount akin to a fire sale clearance—I snapped your wrist, then pinned you down for a thorough beating. Then, you turned the tables and nearly squashed me into paste. Since then, we’ve barely seen each other face-to-face, relying mostly on remote communication through devices. And every time we conversed, I unilaterally humiliated you... Hmm, considering such a bizarre initial encounter and subsequent developments, Tai’a must have been talking nonsense—you surely didn’t mean that, correct?

Rong Hongxue remained silent for a long moment.

“...Pursuing you?” he finally said. Yi Zhen couldn’t be sure if it was due to poor signal quality, but he distinctly felt like he heard slightly hurried breathing.

“Xiao Zhen, you really have quite the sense of humor.”

With his intentions laid bare, Yi Zhen cleared his throat, feeling somewhat awkward. Unconsciously rolling his pen on the table, he dryly remarked, “Uh, unless there’s anything else, I’ll hang up now. You should... get some sleep early?”

Without waiting for Rong Hongxue’s response, he ended the call and rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on.

Ah... Come to think of it, did he forget something important?

Yi Zhen’s gaze slowly drifted, pondering what exactly had slipped his mind…

[The Two million], Tai’a coolly interjected. [Just so you know, I can’t return the money; he has blocked his account from receiving funds from you.]

Right! The two-million starcoin matter hadn’t been resolved yet—he had called specifically to repay him!

Yi Zhen jumped up impulsively, stood for a while, then dejectedly sat back down.

After all this, he still got sidetracked by him. This guy is truly persistent…
