AFTCKCTCKATD - Chapter 20
Chapter 20
I’ve Never Heard Of A Corpse King Being Afraid Of Getting Lost, It Couldn’t Be That He Was Afraid Of Getting Infected?
By the time Ji Yanqing turned back, that figure had vanished into the desolate wilderness. He wanted to call out to the person, but it was too late. They could fire their guns, but the sound would attract even more of the corpse kings.
“What is it?” Xia Shen Shu looked in the direction Ji Yanqing was peering at, but only saw a desolate terrain.
“Someone was just over there.” Ji Yanqing had a strange feeling, and he kept thinking that he recognized him. He tried to remember, but during the last six months since the virus broke out, all the people he had ever met were right there.
Xia Shen Shu turned his attention to Xue Gang’s group. Xue Gang and the others had also heard Ji Yanqing’s words, but they showed no intention of stopping.
Xia Shen Shu raised an eyebrow and refrained from further meddling.
Their people were all here. If there were indeed more on that side, the only possibility was that they belonged to Xue Gang. Xue Gang himself was unconcerned about the situation, so of course, he himself wouldn’t attempt to meddle further.
No one spoke. They hurried along in silence.
Forty minutes later, they spotted a highway up ahead.
The highway was far enough from the preceding village; it would have led to the next town had one continued on the right-hand side.
Once on the highway, the many who had been enduring the high temperatures and exhaustion had no choice but to slow down. The asphalt road was easier to travel on, but also hotter.
Ji Yanqing looked at Ji An and Ji Le. The adults in their group were all a bit overwhelmed after running all this way, but the two little guys hadn’t uttered a single complaint.
“Tell me if you get tired.” Ji Yanqing said softly.
Bearing in mind what Ji Yanqing said, Ji An, who was holding Ji Le’s hand, acting as the elder brother, looked at Ji Yanqing and said solemnly, “I’m not tired.”
Ji Le also hurriedly shook his head. “I’m not tired either.”
What they knew was that if they grew tired, Ji Yanqing would carry them on his back; he wouldn’t get angry or show any disgust, but they also knew that carrying them would make Ji Yanqing even more tired.
The two little guys were trying hard to put up an act. It was so easy for one to see through their little thoughts. Ji Yanqing was touched in his heart, and a feeling of softness and sourness spread through him. However, he did not expose them.
It would be good for them to learn to survive on their own as soon as possible, even though it was likely to be very cruel and painful.
Overhearing the conversation between the adults and the children, Lan Zi’s lips curled into a smile. She rather liked the two little ones.
Over to one side, frigidness filled the brows and eyes of Xue Gang and several other individuals.
These young brats are completely useless at this age, they do nothing but eat their fill, but when something happens, people have to carry them away; they are nothing but thorough and complete trash.
“Roar!” A roar, already too faint to make out, echoed forth.
Everyone cast their gazes towards the direction from which the sound came.
Even though they were already at a considerable distance, the crowd couldn’t help but feel their scalps grow numb amidst those roars.
“By the way, did the other Corpse King from the city lose? “Wu Yao said.
After hearing this, Ji Yanqing and the others came to their senses; several of them looked back at the city, which they could no longer see.
“What Corpse King?” Xue Gang asked.
“We met that beast earlier…” The bald-head roughly summarized his and Zhang Gu Xian’s encounter with the beast.
“You mean there was still a Corpse King in that city before?” Xue Gang exchanged glances with his men, their expressions a complicated mix of surprise and astonishment. They had stayed in that city for almost a week before.
If what Ji Yanqing and the others said was true, then it was a miracle that they were able to leave alive.
“Although we didn’t see it, they had a big fight in the city.” The bald man said.
Xue Gang thought for a moment, and when he looked up again, his face was even more solemn. “Are you sure that the other Corpse King is dead?”
“He must be dead, otherwise why would that beast be here?” said the bald man.
Corpse kings are naturally belligerent and will engage in a bloody battle once they meet. Only the victor is ever able to leave the battlefield alive.
Xue Gang looked back and saw that the expressway behind them stretched all the way to the horizon like a gray ribbon. They were now so far away from the city that it was no longer visible.
“What’s the matter?” The bald man asked in confusion.
“If the corpse king, who was originally in the city, is really the one with strange whereabouts, then he’s unlikely to lose.” Someone next to Xue Gang uttered.
The bald man was stunned, “Why?”
“You don’t know?” The man scanned his gaze over Ji Yanqing’s group. “That guy was originally further north. The last time we heard from him, it was said that he had killed off all the Corpse Kings in the north. Dozens, maybe even hundreds of Corpse Kings—all wiped out by him, single-handedly.”
After pausing, that person added, “For the moment, he’s acknowledged as the strongest corpse king by all survivor groups, and has the greatest potential of becoming the King of corpse kings.”
“King of the Corpse Kings?” This was the first time Ji Yanqing had heard of such a thing.
“You really don’t know anything at all, do you.”
Ji Yanqing remained silent. Indeed, their access to information was severely limited; under such circumstances, unless their survival team encountered other living people, it was impossible for them to receive any new updates.
The man said: “There are two main types of corpse kings, which you should be aware of, right?”
Corpse Kings can typically be classified into two categories: the intellectual type and the brawn type.
An intelligent zombie king mainly evolves toward mental prowess. Their individual strength might not be particularly great, but they can control other common zombies.
Just imagine thousands of zombies besieging from all sides, who can possibly withstand it?
The Strength-type Corpse Kings primarily enhance themselves; their power, speed, recovery ability, defense, and attack strength all significantly increase. That Beast Corpse King must belong to the Strength type.
Most of them had obvious changes in physique, and were almost invulnerable to blades and spears, making them practically invincible.
Power-based corpse kings are relatively common, while intelligence-based ones are less common.
No matter what, whoever they encountered was sure to die.
“There is speculation that the battle between the corpse kings is a trial. They are choosing and competing to become the King of the corpse kings.”
“A trial?” Ji Yanqing’s eyebrows knitted together lightly.
If those Corpse Kings were independent and still instilled such terror, then what if they were to establish a hierarchy of their own? Would there still be a chance of survival for humanity?
Upon hearing this news, the others present, even Xia Shen Shu, all turned ashen.
Their gazes turned in unison toward the direction from which the incessant roars of beasts had been emanating.
Village entrance.
A colossal, black-furred beast was in a squatting position on the bare earth. It let out a yawn while its giant tail swished against the ground leisurely, creating a fan-shaped arc.
Will Feng Yimo come after all?
Yawning again, it began to ponder a very grave question. If it were to make an escape, just how likely was it for Feng Yimo to be able to find it, given the extent of his road blindness?
It quickly inferred that Feng Yi Mo would never, in his lifetime, be able to find it!
With an awoo, it wagged its big tail excitedly, cocking its head slightly as it looked towards the direction of the city located beyond the mountain.
It was hungry.
When Ji Yanqing and his companions entered the downtown area, the sky was completely dark, the temperature plummeted, and their exhaled breath became a visible white fog in the cold air.
It was not suitable to move at night. Decreased visibility in low-light conditions made it easy for them to ignore the hidden zombies, and the zombies would immediately be attracted if there was any commotion.
Instead of finding a place to hide, the group quietly and quickly passed through the buildings.
If what Ji Yanqing had said prior to entering the city was true, and that the Corpse King is who they say he is, then they absolutely must regroup with the main force and hastily exit this vicinity.
Each extra minute they waited could mean death.
“We’ve been here before; the area has already been searched countless times, leaving nothing behind...”
A town full of self-built houses, not very prosperous, was connected to the highway. After walking right along the town for more than twenty minutes, the buildings ahead gradually became more orderly, marking the official entry into the urban area.
As they entered the downtown area, Xue Gang and his group were searching for the main force’s location when the darkness began to tremble.
At first, no one reacted, until that trembling came again. Only then did everyone come to their senses, The trembling was not from the darkness, but from the ground. Something huge was moving towards them at high speed.
A gigantic and swift entity. In the darkness, everyone’s mind immediately conjured up a huge black figure.
“Run!” Ji Yanqing was the first to react.
Simultaneously with his dash out, a massive shadowy figure suddenly appeared within the group’s line of sight. The Beast Corpse King hadn’t spotted them yet, but it was charging directly toward them.
Upon seeing such an overwhelmingly large body, everyone gasped. A chill ran down their spines, from their feet straight to the crowns of their heads.
In the darkness, nobody dared to utter a peep. Biting their teeth, they dashed forward in silence.
After running for quite a distance, everyone turned their heads to look, only for that beast to be even closer to them than before; everyone felt the urge to curse at that very moment.
Yet they dared not let out a peep, because the beast had not yet detected them. If they made a sound, once they were discovered…
Ji Yanqing lightly lifted Ji An and was turning his head to look for a safe route when a figure suddenly flashed by.
In a white shirt and black trench coat, his presence exuded an icy charisma, defiant yet muted.
The darkness was too thick around, and Ji Yanqing could not clearly see the other’s face. However, the pair of deep, cold, and pitch-black eyes under the profound brows suddenly crashed into the depths of his mind without a trace of warmth.
When Ji Yanqing finally reacted, he had already grabbed hold of the other person’s wrist. He couldn’t allow the latter to advance any further; if the Corpse King beast were to be startled, their deaths would be assured.
Caught off guard, the stranger paused, and his icy black eyes turned to gaze at Ji Yanqing.
“Over here!” Ji Yanqing spoke quickly before he could open his mouth.
Ji Yanqing had already recognized the person. He seemed to be the same person who had gotten lost walking around in circles in the neighborhood back in that city. That same person who later felt familiar in the wilderness.
“Yan’er...” Lan Zi’s voice carried a mix of worry and terror.
Ji Yanqing turned his head to look. The moment he spotted the situation behind him, he felt his heart sink into the depths of his gut. The blood in his body turned icy cold, nearly ceasing to circulate.
The beast, running in the darkness, looked toward their direction, having already spotted them.
“Take Ji An and the others and run.” Ji Yanqing gently let go of Ji An and the man he had just grabbed. He pulled out the axe on his back. The creature would easily catch up to them at this distance——
Unless someone stops it.
That beast was lightning-fast. By the time Ji Yanqing managed to retrieve the axe, it had already lunged in front of them. The beast’s massive body pressed down on them with a suffocating force.
Those that stood against the black figure looming over them felt their minds go blank, and the despair of death gathered in their hearts.
In the next moment, the beast had already charged before them but slammed to an abrupt stop, slamming into the tall building beside it with a thunderous “bang”, giving the building a fierce shake, and knocking itself dizzy.
In its giddy state, it glanced in Ji Yanqing’s direction, tucked its tail between its legs, and turned to flee.
It was already running very fast, yet it still seemed as if it was not fast enough, and it was leaping and running even faster, as if it wanted to vanish into thin air.
Ji Yanqing was slightly surprised. Perhaps to others, that beast had just looked at him, but he knew clearly that the beast had been looking at the man beside him.
So that corpse king was frightened off by someone beside him?
